R.P. McMurphy, a charming rogue, contrives to serve a short sentence in an airy mental hospital rather than prison. This, he learns, was a mistake. He clashes with the head nurse and wages war on the institution that confines him; he threatens to tear down the thin boundaries between the sane and the insane. McMurphy leads inmates into revolution and out of introversion, brightening up an otherwise terrifyingly gray world. This is a contemporary tragedy – at times hilarious, at others heroic, but consistently liberating. Featuring Joe DeSane, Rachel Viola, Nick Fondulis, Josh Gladstone, Tanya Tavereau, Josh Perl, Anne Seelbach, Michael Nathanson and Andrew Botsford. Originally produced by the New York Theater Workshop. "In an eminently playable, witty adaptation by Tony Kushner, THE ILLUSION comes across as downright entertaining, not an adjective anyone who reads Corneille in college is likely to expect. Unlike his better known plays, which have heroic subjects, THE ILLUSION is concerned with domestic matters the alienation of parents from children, marital infidelity. While it is serious about these subjects, it puts them in an unusual context: A father has consulted a magician about his estranged son, and the magician shows him scenes from his son's life...The comedy is elegant, full of depth..." Howard Kissel, Daily News "What a fascinating, totally theatrical excursion we're in for in this 17th Century fairytale-fable first spun by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille." We know an enormous amount about our Galaxy, other galaxies, and the Universe as a whole. How can we know about these remote and strange phenomena when all we have to work with is light (or photons) collected by telescopes attached to (or very nearby) the Earth? The answer is that our confidence arises from an interaction of observations and theories; the most successful explanations of cosmological phenomena do a much better job of explaining the observations than any rival explanation, and fit well with other physics results that are well established in the laboratory. Along with discussion of these matters, some of the basic observations that are used to establish the properties of our quirky Universe will be described. Presenter: David W. Hogg has been on the faculty of the NY University Department of Physics since 2001. His interests are in cosmology, galaxies, and the making of fundamental measurements with enormous astrophysical data sets. He is a member of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Collaboration and works with data from the GALEX, Hubble, and Spitzer Space Telescopes, among other facilities. | music at the talkhouse the Stephen Talkhouse 161 Main Street, Amagansett NY 631-267-3117 Battle of the Bands 7:00 pm $5 Glazzies; Arcane; Jamie Ellis; Sound Wave Band; Psycho Rain; Spitten Kitten; The Third Estate. THE WAY OF ALL FISH by Elaine May: The first of the three hit comedies produced Off Broadway under the title Power Plays, this is a ping pong power game played between a self absorbed executive and her seemingly drab secretary. Over an impromptu dinner together, the executive's condescending graciousness drains away as the secretary explains her fantasy of gaining immortality by killing someone famous and successful someone like her boss. "Oodles of laughs." N.Y Daily News. BOY MEETS GIRL by Wendy Wasserstein: Dan and Molly, two successful, thirty-something New Yorkers, are afraid of making a commitment. With the help of their psychiatrists, they finally find the courage to tie the knot under the altar before Her Majesty, the Queen. GOD by Woody Allen: Set in an empty Greek amphitheater, this mad play within a play switches back and forth between ancient Athens and modern Broadway. A Greek actor and a writer are discussing how to end a play. Actors, including Doris Levine from Great Neck, Blanche DuBois, and Groucho Marx, pop out of the audience. Peppered with metaphysical and philosophical questions, the play skids along farcically until the actor and writer conclude that it lacks a beginning as well as an end. If you like singing, then imagine how fabulous you will sound with a band backing you up. We provide the lyric sheets, we provide the rock—we both provide the fun. Rock Star Karaoke consists of a guitar, bass, drummer and host who all hail from their own personal singing/songwriting adventures including rock bands, country bands and musical theater. They have all been performing their entire lives and RSK gives them a new, fun way to entertain for the crowds. RSK is perfect for private parties (keep the crazy neighbor happy), weddings (keep the crazy uncle happy), bars (keep the regular happy), and any other function where you want every single person to have a fantastic time! Even if you don’t want to sing, RSK is a great place to dance and sing along to in the audience because it is all the music you know and love from many different decades. Now you might be thinking to yourself that you are shy enough while doing regular karaoke, but we have seen even the most timid people get up and perform. The band is there to help you out and make you sound great—no skipping of discs—only a memorable, unique performance that you can look back on and say, “Hey I was a rock star once upon a time!” | At the Movies | United Artists Easthampton 30 Main Street, East Hampton NY 631-324-0448 (Matinees on weekends only. Having studied fine arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Dweck began his career in advertising. He went on to become a highly regarded Creative Director who received over 40 international awards, including the coveted Gold Lion at the Cannes International Festival. Two of his long-form television pieces are part of the permanent film collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Drawing inspiration from his teenage years spent by the beach on Long Island, Dweck set out to photographically capture the vanishing surf culture of Montauk, a sleepy fishing village that in the 1970s became a haven for East Coast surfers. Michael Dweck's internationally acclaimed first book, titled The End: Montauk, N.Y. (Harry N. Abrams, 2004), is the photographic chronicle and nostalgic tribute to that hedonistic surf community. "The ultimate homage to the sun-kissed surfing life. Sensuous, seductive and unbearably sexy in its effect," in the words of The New York Times. The Academy was constructed in 1784 with funds contributed by local citizens at the request of the Reverend Samuel Buell, pastor of the East Hampton Presbyterian Church. This remarkable Academy was a coeducational institution preparing young men for college or for careers such as seafaring or surveying. Young women were schooled in spiritual reading and the finer points of being a lady. The first headmaster, Reverend Buell, gave instruction in Latin as well as Greek and French. Students came from a broad range of places including Long Island, New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut as well as from the West Indies. After the State dissolved the chartered academy system, Clinton became a community center, a playhouse, town offices and briefly housed "The East Hampton Star". This late Georgian style building was restored in 1921 by Mr. Lorenzo E. Woodhouse. Visitors can enjoy the wild flower garden behind the property installed by the Garden Club of East Hampton. The farm is of interest not merely because of its importance to the history of East Hampton, but because of its antiquity. Viewed as an artifact which has been shaped to fit the needs and the pleasure of those who have lived in it, the house itself has much to tell us about the origins of colonial New England society and the changes which still affect our lives today. The 1680 Mulford House represents one of the most important and complex artifacts produced by our culture - the family home. The survival of this house, built in 1680, is remarkable since it has been left largely unchanged since 1750. The majority of the framing and wood members of the house have been left undisturbed, enabling scholars to tell the story of the successive changes over time. The Mulford Barn, constructed in 1721, is one of the most intact early eighteenth century English-plan barn forms in New York State and is recognized as an outstanding example of early eighteenth century construction methods and materials. This an exhibition in three parts, with sections entitled Never Look Back; Pressed; and Fifteen People Present Their Favorite Book [After Kosuth], which demonstrates the variety of his creative work. Never Look Back is an exhibition of new work; it consists of framed book pages and photographs of books that are framed and hung on gallery walls. They are readymade art objects unaltered but for their re-contextualization as art. Higgs works with their text, layout and design to make art that is by turns playful, wry, knowing, or reflective. Pressed is an exhibition of letterpress prints by Cary Leibowitz, Peter Doig, Kay Rosen, Dave Muller, Rirkrit Tiravanija and others, including several published by White Columns, an alternative exhibition space in New York City where Higgs has been the director and head curator since 2004. The central orienting point for the show is an installation of books entitled Fifteen People Present Their Favorite Book [After Kosuth]. This is a re-staging of a little known work by Joseph Kosuth from 1967 in which Kosuth took books chosen by Carl Andre, Robert Morris, Sol Lewitt and others and presented them as an installation in the Lannis Gallery. By re-staging this pioneering piece of conceptual art (this time using books chosen by Wade Guyton, Adam McEwen, Richard Prince and others) Higgs is both calling attention to an overlooked piece of art history, and using it to signal toward the conceptual underpinnings of his own work. Fifteen People Present Their Favorite Book [After Kosuth] is a work of art but also an act of curation. It has not been made in the usual sense and so it blurs the line between the creative work of an artist and that of a curator. And, as a work after Kosuth, it makes no claim of originality but relies instead on an appropriated idea. By failing in such an exemplary way to be a skillfully made and original work, Higgs’ installation creates a series of challenges to traditional definitions of art. The questions it raises are fundamental to any understanding of the multi-faceted work Higgs has made throughout his career. By ignoring the usual boundaries that would delineate the role of the artist, the curator, the writer, et cetera, Matthew Higgs has defined a singular role for himself and thereby become a figure of central importance in the art world today. Matthew Higgs is represented by Murray Guy Gallery in New York City and director of White Columns, which celebrated its fortieth anniversary this year. Situated on two acres on the south shore of eastern long Island, it was opened to the public on July 10, 1993. Through the years, the garden has emerged, creeping bit by bit towards the property lines, always in transition, its vital signs regularly enhanced by subtle maneuvers. A few constants are evident, such as an unusual and somewhat radical pruning technique, a goodly amount of whimsy, and a bold use of color on the outdoor furnishings, which are sometimes repainted to complement nearby blooms and foliage. In our bustling village young men from small East End towns often found work as whalers, a job that promised them the possibility of earning more money than they could make on the farm and the chance to see places they had only dreamed of or heard about from other whalers. These young local men, together with foreign whalers, brought culture and customs, stories and lore from distant lands to Sag Harbor. During this time period Sag Harbor became a truly international port town, where diverse cultures came together for one pursuit: the hunt of the mighty whale. Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so much more it deserves its own category. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey as its primary sugar source and is often referred to as honey wine. Being made from honey, one would naturally expect it to be very sweet and although it usually is, it can actually range from dry to very sweet. Mead is usually still, though it can be made sparkling and can range from a mild low alcoholic content up to very high. Mead is arguably the oldest alcoholic beverage on the planet with some evidence dating it back approximately 10,000 years. Due to many different cultural and financial reasons, mead has fallen out of favor over the many years and now we call it the 'oldest alcoholic beverage no one has ever heard of.' A far cry from its heyday when it was referred to as the 'Nectar of the Gods.' Mead can be produced in many variations including a plain honey wine (traditional - honey only), flavored with fruit (melomel), spices (metheglin), vegetables, or any combination of ingredients limited only by the imagination of the wine maker and the resources he has at hand. Everyone has their favorite way of using the internet. Many of us search to find what we want, click in to a specific website, read what’s available and click out. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because it’s efficient. We learn to tune out things we don’t need and go straight for what’s essential.
