We are an established band out of East Hampton, NY and have been playing for more than 20 years in the area. From private party, weddings, fund raisers, benefits and numerous local club engagements we provide a solid sound for whatever venue you may be intrested in. Feel free to contact us at any time for your next party or event. Thanks, Mamalee Rose & Friends. The Lone Sharks 10:00 pm The Sharks play up to 150 gigs a year, and most of them are still out east where a devoted following keeps the band working year round. The Lone Shark CDs, consisting mostly of Gene's self-penned tunes have been a catalyst for newer and better things. "We've learned a lot in putting them out. What to do, and what not to do. We’re still trying to capture our live sound.” Gene plays a battered 1967 Gretsch Anniversary hollow body guitar, and usually wears black attire "because Johnny Cash and Orson Welles did, though I'm not sure they did for the same reason." Shark fans have come to expect the usual on-stage theatrics from Gene: duckwalks, windmills, and show-stopping splits, a la T-Bone Walker and Chuck Berry. "They're not really splits," says Gene. "I can't get low enough. They're more splats." Darden, dubbed 'the miniature Tina Turner' after her incredible voice and style, had previously toured throughout Europe and North America as a member of numerous different musical acts. After years of doing this, she finally realized that what she really craved was a band of her own. As a result, Dawnette took it upon herself to recruit the most outstanding musicians she could find with intentions of creating a musical masterpiece. Wednesday December 31st New Years Eve Montauk Point State Park 631-668-5000 Seals on Long Island : During the cooler months, some special visitors from the north come to Long Island starting in mid-November. They return to Northern New England and Canada in May. Seals belonging to the Pinniped family (meaning “feather footed” or “winged”), are true seals which lack external earflaps, have torpedo shaped bodies for fast swimming. They have long, sharp claws to help them dig into the ice while climbing out of the water or onto the beach. Unlike sea lions, their front flippers are short and they are referred to as “earless” seals. Their hind flippers are webbed and pointed backwards to help them swim. They have been recorded swimming over 12 miles per hour and have been spotted swimming 70 miles off of the coast of Long Island. Seals haul out of the water to rest, sleep, and warm up in the sun’s heat. While on land sunning themselves, they are often seen in a “banana” shaped position. The seals we see on Long Island are most often Harbor seals, but there are a few other types, such as harp seals, grey seals, hooded seals, and ringed seals. Numbers have been increasing in past years into the thousands around Long Island due to the changing location of their food sources and the changing temperatures of their watery habitat. Most of the seals that visit Long Island are younger seals. These marine mammals eat a variety of crustaceans, fish and shellfish like mussels, clams, oysters and squid. Seal Observation Walks 10:00 am $5/person ($3 for children) plus a $6 vehicle parking fee. Join Mike Bottini on a 3 mile (round trip) hike to view seals and learn about their habits, behavior, and population trends in the Long Island region. Dress warm and wear comfortable hiking shoes; we will be outdoors for 2.5 hours. Binoculars recommended but not necessary. Mike will bring a spotting scope that everyone will get a chance to use. This program is sponsored by New York State Parks, and is scheduled to coincide with low tide, when seals are most likely to be basking on the rocks. Meet at the Montauk Point concession area. Call 631-668-5000 for reservations and additional information. Having studied fine arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Dweck began his career in advertising. He went on to become a highly regarded Creative Director who received over 40 international awards, including the coveted Gold Lion at the Cannes International Festival. Two of his long-form television pieces are part of the permanent film collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Drawing inspiration from his teenage years spent by the beach on Long Island, Dweck set out to photographically capture the vanishing surf culture of Montauk, a sleepy fishing village that in the 1970s became a haven for East Coast surfers. Michael Dweck's internationally acclaimed first book, titled The End: Montauk, N.Y. (Harry N. Abrams, 2004), is the photographic chronicle and nostalgic tribute to that hedonistic surf community. "The ultimate homage to the sun-kissed surfing life. Sensuous, seductive and unbearably sexy in its effect," in the words of The New York Times. EAST HAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY 101 Main Street, East Hampton 324-6850 Osborn-Jackson House, c. 1740 101 Main Street, East Hampton This colonial house, one of the few still in its original position on Main Street, is owned and maintained by the Village of East Hampton. Lionel Jackson donated the property to the Village of East Hampton in 1977 for use as a museum. It serves as the headquarters for the East Hampton Historical Society and a period house museum for the general public. The museum features a display of furnishings dating from about 1780 to 1820, typical of the well-to-do lifestyle of a post-colonial East End family. Open year round: Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm - Admission: $4 adults, $3 seniors, $2 students - Free for members Clinton Academy, c. 1784 151 Main Street East Hampton Clinton Academy was one of the first academies in New York State chartered by the Board of Regents. The Academy was constructed in 1784 with funds contributed by local citizens at the request of the Reverend Samuel Buell, pastor of the East Hampton Presbyterian Church. This remarkable Academy was a coeducational institution preparing young men for college or for careers such as seafaring or surveying. Young women were schooled in spiritual reading and the finer points of being a lady. The first headmaster, Reverend Buell, gave instruction in Latin as well as Greek and French. Students came from a broad range of places including Long Island, New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut as well as from the West Indies. After the State dissolved the chartered academy system, Clinton became a community center, a playhouse, town offices and briefly housed "The East Hampton Star". This late Georgian style building was restored in 1921 by Mr. Lorenzo E. Woodhouse. Visitors can enjoy the wild flower garden behind the property installed by the Garden Club of East Hampton. Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day: Sat & Sun 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, or by appointment. Admission: $4 adults, $3 seniors, $2 students - Free for members Mulford Farm, c. 1680 10 James Lane, at Montauk Highway, East Hampton The Mulford Farm, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is considered one of America's most significant, intact English Colonial farmsteads. The farm is of interest not merely because of its importance to the history of East Hampton, but because of its antiquity. Viewed as an artifact which has been shaped to fit the needs and the pleasure of those who have lived in it, the house itself has much to tell us about the origins of colonial New England society and the changes which still affect our lives today. The 1680 Mulford House represents one of the most important and complex artifacts produced by our culture - the family home. The survival of this house, built in 1680, is remarkable since it has been left largely unchanged since 1750. The majority of the framing and wood members of the house have been left undisturbed, enabling scholars to tell the story of the successive changes over time. The Mulford Barn, constructed in 1721, is one of the most intact early eighteenth century English-plan barn forms in New York State and is recognized as an outstanding example of early eighteenth century construction methods and materials. These images celebrate “The Last Stand” against the law that closed the door on a way of American life and work. Situated on two acres on the south shore of eastern long Island, it was opened to the public on July 10, 1993. Through the years, the garden has emerged, creeping bit by bit towards the property lines, always in transition, its vital signs regularly enhanced by subtle maneuvers. A few constants are evident, such as an unusual and somewhat radical pruning technique, a goodly amount of whimsy, and a bold use of color on the outdoor furnishings, which are sometimes repainted to complement nearby blooms and foliage. In our bustling village young men from small East End towns often found work as whalers, a job that promised them the possibility of earning more money than they could make on the farm and the chance to see places they had only dreamed of or heard about from other whalers. These young local men, together with foreign whalers, brought culture and customs, stories and lore from distant lands to Sag Harbor. During this time period Sag Harbor became a truly international port town, where diverse cultures came together for one pursuit: the hunt of the mighty whale. Have you ever tried mead? Maybe you tried mead while visiting Europe or at a medieval festival? Have you been told that mead was like beer, a beer with honey or even a wine with honey? Mead has some similarities to these beverages, but it is so much more it deserves its own category. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey as its primary sugar source and is often referred to as honey wine. Being made from honey, one would naturally expect it to be very sweet and although it usually is, it can actually range from dry to very sweet. Mead is usually still, though it can be made sparkling and can range from a mild low alcoholic content up to very high. Mead is arguably the oldest alcoholic beverage on the planet with some evidence dating it back approximately 10,000 years. Due to many different cultural and financial reasons, mead has fallen out of favor over the many years and now we call it the 'oldest alcoholic beverage no one has ever heard of.' A far cry from its heyday when it was referred to as the 'Nectar of the Gods.' Mead can be produced in many variations including a plain honey wine (traditional - honey only), flavored with fruit (melomel), spices (metheglin), vegetables, or any combination of ingredients limited only by the imagination of the wine maker and the resources he has at hand.
